The Process:

Tunnel Vision | 2025

This oil painting was inspired by the contrast of a vast, bright landscape framed by the dark foliage of California oak trees.

This work's aim was to capture the feeling of safety from the oak trees, whilst leaving the viewer a chance to venture along the path, out into the openness of the landscape beyond.

Initial block-in of the darkest parts of the painting, mostly on the tree trunk and darkest vegetation. Begin work on the background.

Block in the foliage. Initial layers of fields to establish shape and dimension. Lay in dark and mid-tones to build darkest values.

Establish mid-range and lighter values. Add depth to background, and build highlights in foreground foliage sparingly.

Add sky holes in foliage of trees to lighten and soften the painting. Add final details in branches and foliage. The painting is complete!
