The Process:

Brevitude | 2025

Framed painting of a coastal scene with rocky shoreline and blue sky.

Brevitude explores how “home” can exist beyond a physical space, as a feeling and a presence. Whether it's in the way light touches something familiar or in a warmth we feel deep inside us, home is both within us and around us, revealed in moments of observation and connection for those who choose to notice.

After a stain of burnt sienna all over the canvas, an initial block-in of the composition is established, with darks / shadows blocked in with a mix of ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, and burnt sienna.

Establishing layers of color are blocked in, working from the foreground towards the back - keeping in mind the far rocks have lower contrast.

The far water and spray is added, and the sky is blocked in using vertical strokes.

Depth is added to the water, the highlights and sprays are added, and pelicans detailed in. A translucent water effect is established in the foreground water to create depth. The painting is complete!

The older I become, the more I realize that the most extraordinary parts of life often arrive disguised as ordinary afternoons.
